The initial idea of creating  the NIHA Dragons Pee Wee Hockey Team was through talks with Shawn Cookson and Scott Atkins during the 2011 Season. At this time there were only 2 teams in this league:

  • West Coast Flyers; and
  • Cockburn Hawks.

The games had become uninteresting for both players and spectators as playing against the same team every week was becoming mundane. NIHA had the senior divisions catered for with the Vikings  Conference, Vikings Non Checking and Panthers teams.

The Dragons were introduced into the league in 2012 , along with a second team from the Hawks, which saw the league double in size.  The games that year were perhaps the best hockey at this level for many years. The Pee Wee League saw some of the most competetive hockey legues in Perth, as most games were extremely close every week.

In their first year the players that formed the Dragons were a mix of  players from West Coast and Cockburn as well as many new players from Learn To Play session that were run by XIA at the time.

Going into this league as absolute underdogs the Dragons came through to win Silver in the 2012 Grand final.

The following year, and with brand new Jereays, they managed to back it up with the same result. With great support form the parents and other supporters they were definitely the loudest in Perth for 2013. They even have their own team song written for them in 2013 (We are the Mighty Dragons - by Cri$i$. Mr Swagger) which is played at the start of every home game.

Going into the 2014 season the Dragons are looking towards claiming the Gold medal. With a solid core group of players from the last 2 years and many new players from both Learn to Play and some coming into the club from other avenues, they are looking like the team to look out for in 2014.
